Music in the Park 2016
Brad Abel Band
Music in the Park kicks off the 2016 season with a band from our neighbouring city of Red Deer! The Brad Abel Band play a variety of genres and their inspirations come from several artists that include Dallas Green, Elliot Smith and Damien Rice. Brad originally hails from Jasper but moved to Red Deer to attend college. Even though he has a Business Administration degree, music kept calling him. We are glad it did!!!
You guessed it!! This group is from Edmonton! And they are a traditional Blue Grass/New Grass band! They feature great vocal harmonies and fine pickin’ (maybe some grinnin’) is guaranteed. They work in “off the beaten path” chord progressions and layered harmonies which add to their musical style. Should be an awesome treat for the ears!!
This Wednesday, Music in the Park is very pleased to present Kim Cote, a Calgary musician who has been connected to his love of music since his preschool years. He remembers his grandmother lifting him up onto a stool so he could reach the keys of an old upright piano. Kim started his first band in high school and has been a member of numerous bands and duos ever since. He has toured in the states from Bridgeport to San Diego and in Canada from Charlottetown to Vancouver. Over the years, Kim has learned well over 3000 songs! He has awed audiences time and again with his amazing repertoires. The request line is always open when Kim performs!
Joal Kamps is an award winning free-spirited singer songwriter sensation! Born and raised in the area, he currently calls Calgary home. He has created his own genre of music which he calls Rocky-mountain Folk-Pop. His passion for people, music and laugher shows in his approach to performing. He has toured Asia, Europe, and Central America and has included Lacombe on his Canadian Tour!
Flat Iron Jazz
Music in the Park is very excited to have Flat Iron Jazz perform this week as they are Lacombe’s own! This group can be up to 16 members playing and singing. Their musical styles include big band, rock, country, disc, polka, funk, and even latin! So grab your friends and family and head on down to the LMC Park and enjoy a night of live music and sing along to the classic sounds of the big band era and other popular music styles!!
Hope everyone has a chance to catch this concert on Canada Day! Cranna Lake will be rockin’ and the crowd is going to be having a great time. Thanks to the Community Market for moving over to Cranna Lake to help give us a festival atmosphere.
This week we are pleased to feature our very own Randi Boulton and her band.
The Incredible Randi Boulton, as Canadian rock icon Tom Cochrane calls her, is a powerhouse singer, one whose voice seriously parallels those of her musical motivators: Norah Jones, Janis Joplin, Adele, Melissa Etheridge, Jewel, as well as fellow Canadians Jann Arden and Sarah McLachlan.
With a vast and eclectic taste in music, Randi prefers not to be boxed into one genre. Like so many creative spirits, she writes when inspiration hits. But one thing is for sure: Randi’s vocals create whatever sound she desires, whether that is reggae or rock! Even social media is noticing her talent thanks to getting a nudge on Twitter from fellow Canadian, Jann Arden, who tweeted to her fans: "Follow this kid...pretty great singer". Check out Randi on her website: http://www.randiboulton.com
The Nova Scotiables
The Nova Scotiables bring to the Park this week and unconventional approach to traditional, original and contemporary Maritime Music. They call Calgary home, but can be often found hitting the road to bring the impromptu kitchen party music to all their fans at festivals, drinking establishments, and to right here in Lacombe at Music in the Park! The Nova Scotiables are sure to delight the crowd with their high energy and Maritime Music.
The Dixieland band playing this week is a trio from Calgary that has played together for years. The banjo player is internationally known and has won many awards. All are professional musicians that play regularly at the Sylvan Lake Festival, Spruce Meadows, etc. They will play selections such as "Sweet Georgia Brown", "When the Saints go Marching In", "Muscrat Ramble", etc.
Roses and Smoke
Roses and Smoke are a duo out of Red Deer featuring Paeton Cameron and Kaylee Rose. Their contemporary music style, blending the worlds of folk, jazz, and roots music for a unique, soulful listening experience, is creating a following wherever they perform. You will fall in love with Paeton’s musicality and Kaylee’s beautiful voice.
They may see themselves as a rock party band, but the versatility of this band will amaze. They have performed twice for Music in the Park in the past and are definitely a crowd pleaser. The Clamdaggers perform a variety of favorites ranging from classic rock to Stevie Wonder. They have even been known to do ABBA! This bands talent includes Ryan Marchant on vocals/guitar, Curtis Phagoo on bass/vocals, Jeremy Doody on guitar and Dan Barton on drums.
Back for a second year, this week we will be hosting “The Blueseros”. They are a premier Calgary-based five-piece band specializing in blues, latino, jazz, funk and rock. The band has been a fixture in the Calgary music scene for the past 15 years jamming in local clubs and performing at special events and parties. This great band includes Mike Sullivan - Bass/Lead Vocal, Gord Davies - Guitar/Vocals, Mark Lamontagne - Keyboards/Harmonica, Wayne Moser - Drums / Vocals
Don’t miss this one, and the “Blueseros” are loads of fun to listen to. Please pass this on to your friends and colleagues.
Kim Denis is one of our own, a Lacombe girl who has gone on to earn a double masters in choral conducting and vocal performance at U of A. She is a choral master, music arranger, performer in musicals and a soloist. Currently she is working on a solo recording featuring original arrangements of the music of Joni Mitchell and Jan Arden. Her performances are dynamic and inspiring, her energy boundless so don’t miss the opportunity to spend an evening with Kim.
Who wouldn’t want to spend an evening with Elvis??? Always a favourite with the Music in the Park fans, Lacombe’s own CJ Berube will perform this week. He’s got the looks, he’s got the moves, and most of all he’s got the voice we all love.
This week we are pleased to present a crowd favourite: Flashback Freddy! Flashback Freddie is a blast from the past performing the 50’s & 60’s hits from your favourite artists including Elvis, Beatles, Chuck Berry, Beach Boys, Fats Domino, Del Shannon, Roy Orbison, Ricky Nelson and many more. He transports you back to that special time of poodle skirts and hot rods, the music was swinging and the times were bopping. Check out his website at http://www.flashbackfreddy.ca.
Tap 9 was formed in 2010 and their musical styles and backgrounds range from Blues, Country, Jazz and Rock. The band shows no limitations to their writing and performing abilities. Since the release of their first album in 2011, their identity has become more defined. The group leans back into their country roots, and steps into modern classic rock, but with a twist! One never knows what to expect with these guys, so get ready to tap those toes, do a little finger snappin’ and a whole lotta fun!
Rising Country Music artist, Alecia Aichelle captivates her audience with her angelic vocals, her alluring piano accompaniment and relatable lyrics. Raised in Kelowna BC she now calls Red Deer home after moving to attend Red Deer College where she achieves a Music Diploma in Voice and Performance. Alecia was introduced to Country Music at a young age and her early influences were Martina McBride, Faith Hill, Shania, Dolly, Paul Brandt, and CCR.
